Landscape painter Robert Marchessault was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1953. He studied visual arts at Dawson College in Montreal before going on to earn his B.F.A in 1978 at Concordia University and later his M.A. in 1997 from the University of Toronto. Since the mid-1970’s, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, grants and scholarships, and his work has been featured in a multitude of publications, juried shows, group shows and over 50 solo exhibitions. “My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove nonessential visual elements. When a work is successful, it has a poetry that presents some aspects of my understanding of who I am.” Over the past three decades, his landscapes have evolved to where they now “focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance.” His works simultaneously convey a sense of enormity and calm. His paintings can be found in private, public and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe including 20th Century Fox, Canada Council Art Bank and the University of Montreal. He lives and paints in Shanty Bay, Ontario, Canada. Read an article about Robert Marchessault View Robert Marchessault's work
